Ice is the primary solid state of water and a common component of many planetary bodies.

INTRODUCTION

Ice is a common solid on the surface of the Earth and other planets. Ice in the form of glaciers, ice caps and ice sheets cover about 10 percent of the land area on Earth, covering an area of 15 million square kilometers (5.8 million square miles). The largest ice caps and ice sheets are found in Antarctica and Greenland. About 75% of the fresh water on Earth is found in the form of ice.
