Vitalism was a theory about the nature of life which postulated the existence of a fluid or substance unique to life which served as its essence.
Introduction This theory was taught by the ancient Greeks, but is part of the storyline of several science fiction alternate universes. Two well known examples is the force in Star Wars, and the ability of sensors in the Star Trek universe to detect what are called life signs.
