The Maine Coon cat is a large breed of domestic cats which originated in Maine, North America.

Introduction

The cats are very large, 10 to 20 pounds, fluffy and have tufts on the tip of their ears. They have a friendly disposition so they are called gentle giants. They were considered the third most popular breed by the cat fanciers association (CFA) in 2020. Their distinctive traits are the result of natural adaptation to the cold climates of the American north east. They were considered "barn cats" during the early parts of their history and almost disappeared in the 1950s. They were accepted for CFA championship status in 1976.
