A proton, along with the neutron and the electron is one of three elementary particles which make up all matter.

Introduction

It is the found in the atomic nucleus along with neutron. It has an electrical charge which is the opposite of the electron and by convention is assigned a charge of positive one. It has a mass close to that of the neutron and most stable atomic nuclei are composed of approximately equal numbers of protons and neutrons.
